CHAPTER ELECTIONS: THE NOMINATIONS!

The nominations are in for our chapter's Board of Directors and officers.

All three incumbants were nominated. There are also two additional nominations to fill two vacancies. That means at the close of the nominations process, all five candidates are running unopposed. Under our bylaws this means no further election is needed. An email will be sent to chapter members and you will be asked to reply with any objections by Sunday, July 27th, 2008. If no objections are received, the new board will automatically be seated at 12:01am PDT on July 28th.

Nominees:

Kevin Barry - Chapter President
Emmy Gonzales - Vice President Programming (incumbant)
Scott Gutman - Vice President Membership & webmaster (incumbant)
Japhy Grant - board member at large
Chris Lisotta - board member at large (incumbant)

Barring no objections to the nominations, please welcome our two new board members. Kevin Barry has been a very active NLGJA member with close ties to the national Board of Directors and the staff in Washington. The board is thrilled that Kevin can now put his superb leadership and strategizing skills to work for us as Chapter President. Japhy Grant is a freelance journalist with Out, The Advocate, AfterElton, and Flaming Politics. He has taken a keen intertest in chapter activities and governance and the board looks forward to working with him!

All-Expenses-Paid Seminars in Health Journalism

Call for Applications! All-Expenses-Paid Seminars in Health Journalism
Seminar Schedule:

Session 1: July 31-Aug. 3, 2008 in Los Angeles
Session 2: Oct. 23-26, 2008 in Los Angeles

Deadline to Apply: June 27

The Annenberg School for Communication’s California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships
USC’s Annenberg School for Communication is calling for applications for its California Health Journalism seminars. The all-expenses-paid program, held in Los Angeles, offers journalists a chance to step away from the newsroom to hone their skills and gain new perspectives on covering health and health care. The application deadline is June 27.

The Fellowships are open to all professional print, broadcast and online journalists with a passion for health news, not just reporters on the health beat. We welcome applications from mainstream and ethnic media journalists. In intimate workshops, field trips and discussions, fellows learn from the country’s most respected health and medical experts, from top journalists in the field and from each other.

During Session 1, we focus on craft, with hands-on workshops on investigating hospitals and nursing homes, understanding medical statistics and medical studies, narrative story telling techniques, and more.

During Session 2, we explore the latest thinking about “Healthy Communities” -- how neighborhood life, work conditions, social inequities, race and education influence health.
Or, as documentary film maker and program speaker Larry Adelman puts it: “why some of us get sicker more often and die sooner." Session 2 will also offer briefings on online mapping tools and digital story telling.
